Course Title: Worshipping the Undivided Trinity:
An Introduction to Eastern Orthodoxy
Course Description: For 2,000 years the Orthodox Church has been proclaiming the Apostolic Faith. Yet Orthodox Christianity remains one of the best kept ‘secrets’ in America. This course will introduce the student to this ancient and future Faith, explore important developments in Orthodox Church history and theology, and expose the student to the richness of Eastern Orthodox worship and spirituality.
Syllabus
- What the Orthodox Church is and what it is not
—an Introduction to both the Orthodox Church and this course, answering basic questions.
- Apostolic authority in the Orthodox Church
—understanding the context in which Orthodox Faith and Doctrine developed and how the Church has continued to faithfully proclaim the Apostolic Faith for 2,000 years.
- The development of Trinitarian doctrine
—the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed and the 7 Ecumenical Councils of the undivided Church.
- The Orthodox understanding of Creation, the Fall, the human person, and salvation
- Worship, Sacrament, and Mystery
—understanding the Sacraments as encounters with Christ; living life sacramentally; praying as you believe.
- The Orthodox Church today
—proclaiming the ancient, present, and future Faith: Living the Ascetical life through prayer, fasting, and Scripture reading.
