Holy Cross Orthodox Church

The Falling Asleep (Dormition) of the Mother of God will be celebrated at Holy Cross tomorrow evening (Thursday, August 14) at 7:00pm. The evening service will include the traditional blessing of flowers and herbs.

All are invited to bring either garden-picked or store-bought flowers and/or herbs for the blessing.

Please place them on the table at the front of the nave of the church. Following the service, Khouria Frederica will give a brief meditation on the last days of the Theotokos.

The OCF at UMBC is hosting a coffee house on the campus of UMBC on the 16 September and we need your help! We need folks to donate food and or money for this event. We are planning on having coffee and baked goods, and other snacks for the students. We are offering this to them for free. So if you would like to purchase, make or donate money towards this, please contact Greg at umbcocf [at] gmail [dot] com. We have done the coffee house before, and it has been a very successful event. Please consider helping out with this very important ministry. Thank you!

Following this Thursday night's Divine Liturgy (Dormition), Kh. Frederica will give a brief talk on the last earthly days of the Theotokos. The presentation will be in the nave, given our under-construction parish hall.

GrassfedBALT is a local buying club that provides pastured meats and raw dairy products to the Baltimore area. We currently have drop locations in place in Mt Airy, Pikesville, Catonsville, Little Italy, Parkville, Glen Burnie, and Kingsville. This all-natural food comes from a local Amish farmer. The invitations for the 15th Anniversary Banquet are being sent out primarily via e-mail. Please watch your inbox for an evite from "events [at] holycrossonline [dot] org". In general, only one e-vite was sent per household, so please check all e-mail addresses. RSVPs are needed by August 23!

This Tuesday evening after Vespers (aprox 730pm, ending by 9pm) we'll meet at the church to discuss various issues around behavior expectations, standards, and supervision vis a vis the proposal sent to parents recently, and hopefully reach a working consensus. Parents and all interested are encouraged to attend.

There are three recorded lectures on the Theotokos available online. They were given Bright Week of 2006 at the Life-Giving Spring Monastery, by Fr. Demetrios Carellas, who I believe is the priest assigned to the Nativity of the Theotokos Monastery in Saxonburg, PA. ... 

On Saturday, September 6, after Vespers, we'll have supper, followed by a rehearsal of the Sunday School for their puppet show, The Balalaika on the Onion Dome.

Following the rehearsal, around 8pm, we will have a showing of Fiddler on the Roof for the entire parish outdoors with our big screen! Please join us for dinner and the movie —bring your lawn chairs and blankets. There'll be popcorn for all. And, if you've never seen Fiddler before, it'll make the play even more fun; if you've seen it before, you know what a joy it is!
