Holy Cross Orthodox Church

On Saturday, September 6, after Vespers, we'll have supper, followed by a rehearsal of the Sunday School for their puppet show, The Balalaika on the Onion Dome.

Following the rehearsal, around 8pm, we will have a showing of Fiddler on the Roof for the entire parish outdoors with our big screen! Please join us for dinner and the movie —bring your lawn chairs and blankets. There'll be popcorn for all. And, if you've never seen Fiddler before, it'll make the play even more fun; if you've seen it before, you know what a joy it is!

The Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of the Great City-of-God Antioch and all the East met last week at the Balamand under the presidency of His Beatitude, The Most Blessed Patriarch IGNATIUS IV. Present were The Most Reverend Metropolitans ILYAS (Kurban) of Tripoli, SPYRIDON (Khouri) of Zahle, GEORGE (Khodre) of Jbayl and Batroun, JOHN (Monsour) of Latakiya, ELIAS (Audi) of Beirut, ELIA (Saliba) of Hama, ELIAS (Kafoury) of Tyre, Sidon and Marj'ayoun, SABA (Esper) of Bosra and Jabal al-Arab, GEORGE (Abu-Zakhem) of Homs, and PAUL (Yaziji) of Aleppo and Alexandretta.

Among the agenda items were elections for the widowed Metropolitical Sees of Western Europe which is headquartered in Paris, France and formerly headed by the late Metropolitan GABRIEL (Saleeby), and of Akkar which is headquartered in Halba, north Lebanon and formerly headed by the late Metropolitan PAUL (Bandaly). Our AC system is still not functioning up to par. The chillers are producing very cold water, but for some reason that water isn't getting to the fan-coil units that cool the building. We're moving ahead with the other renovations to the parish hall while the HVAC contractor diagnose and fix the AC. We're hoping to begin painting within two weeks.

The Brotherhood of St. Joseph will be meeting this weekend at Doug A.'s home at 8am. Please let Doug know if you plan to attend so we can adequately prepare food.

The Greek language class taught by Vessela Marcum will resume on Sunday, June 22 starting at 12:45pm. Classes will be held at Katherine M.'s home and will run through sometime in August. Please contact us with any questions!

This week in Church school -- still more ethnic adventures.  Review the stories of St. Sergius, St. Innocent (Apostle to the Aleuts), St. Herman, and St. Peter the Aleut.  Visit the library for books on Eskimos and Aleuts; look at pictures of Alaskan scenery, igloos, seals, walruses, etc.  Visit these animals at the zoo.  Now travel to Russia – try a dinner of cabbage, kielbasa, pierogies (Mrs. T’s are easy),  beets, etc.  Visit one of our Slavic parishes – St. Andrew’s OCA or Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox or Four Evangelists Ukrainian.  Time to pull out that Cyrillic alphabet again and practice some Russian words; just wait till you try “hello”, “thank you”, and “good-bye” in Russian! Don't forget the word puzzle and coloring pages in the Parents' Guide -- color the icons and place them in your icon corner this week. ...
