Prayers Before Reading the Bible

from the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Shine into our heart, O loving Master, the pure light of Your divine knowledge and open the eyes of our minds to an understanding of the things Your Gospel teaches. Implant in us also a reverence for Your blessed commandments so that, putting down the desires of our bodies, we may pursue a spiritual way of life, thinking and doing only those things that will please You. For You are the light of our souls and our bodies, Christ our God, and to You we give glory: to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and unto the ages. Amen.

O how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

O God, You have spoken to us Your divine and saving words. Illumine the souls of us sinners to comprehend that which has been read, that we do not appear simply as hearers of Your spiritual words, but doers of good deeds, true pursuers of faith, having a blameless life and a conduct without reproach in Christ our Lord, with Whom You are blessed and glorified, together with Your all-holy and good, and life-giving Spirit, now and unto the ages. Amen.
